CORTLAND, NY

Say good-bye to winter and hello to spring at The Arts at Grace concert on Sunday, April 20 at 4:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 13 Court Street in Cortland. Bass-baritone David Neal and members of the core ensemble of the Society for New Music will be the featured performers in this exciting and varied program that includes two world premieres.

One of America’s most frequently performed and commissioned composers, Lowell Liebermann wrote Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening: Six Songs on Poems of Robert Frost especially for the concert. Prominent modern American composer Robert Paterson was commissioned to write Winter Songs that he will conduct. Finally, Syracuse based composer Marc Mellits will conduct his Gonzalo Speaks (2005).

A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music and Cornell University, bass-baritone David Neal has performed throughout the United States including many venues in Central New York. Neal is Associate Professor of Performing Arts at SUNY Cortland and the Artistic Director of The Arts at Grace.

The Society for New Music core ensemble consists of well-known Syracuse area musicians, including pianist Sar-Shalom Strong, violinist Cristina Buciu, cellist David LeDoux, flutist Laura Campbell, clarinetist Richard Faria, and percussionist Rob Bridge.

Donna Anderson, retired SUNY Cortland professor of music and scholar of the work of American composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes, will join the composers and musicians in a discussion of the music and the composition process.

Admission to all Arts at Grace events is free, but voluntary donations can be made at the door. Come and enjoy a spectacular performance. Then, stay for the reception and talk personally with the composers and musicians. For further information, call the church at (607)753-3073.
